new print // periwinkle
Earlier in the summer I started sketching up a new print idea as I really enjoyed working on my Welsh poppy design + wanted to keep up the momentum! With this new print idea, I knew I wanted to make a repeat pattern that travelled across/flowed horizontally; a print to feel wrapped around a lampshade drum or cushion but I wasn’t sure which flower to base it on. At first I thought of the phlox flowers as these blooms were appearing in several patches in the garden but these reminded me of foxgloves; tall + travelling upwards but I loved their cluster of petals which also reminded me of periwinkle flowers + their unusual shaped petals. This then sparked the design! Not only did the colour appeal to me but its name too; Periwinkle! How sweet. David + I once visited a Periwinkle Cottage, a tiny old cottage when we were house hunting a very long time ago now. Funny how things + memories can pop up!
With some soft block I had left over I carved away various sized petals with a wonky star-like shape to them + linked them together, slightly staggering them in height to add a bit of interest to the flow of the repeat pattern.
Only recently have I had chance to print + make anything using this new block. I mixed inks in a similar shade to the flowers themselves; a light blue/violet colourway which seemed to change ever so slightly when each print was revealed. I quite like the effect of the blue being a subtle different hue, more or less purple as I printed away.
I’m really pleased with the size + scale of this design + the space between the rows of petals. I feel it works well on the size of cushions + shades I make + it’s something a little bit different from my other floral inspired designs.
New ‘ Periwinkle’ - made to order lampshade drums + cotton cushions are now available from my website. This design can be created in any colours - in colours I print with for my many other designs or handprinted in custom colours of your choice. Bespoke shades + cushion sizes are also an option - Feel free to contact me if I can help you.
I still have some soft block at the end of my desk which is now calling me…
